Llangollen Canal again

Tuesday:

We had a very peaceful night last night in such a quiet area. At times we had to open the door to hear nothing more easily.

We left this morning a bit before 9. Ellesmere was about 3 hours away and we were lucky that when we turned into the Ellesmere arm, there was a spare berth, along the tow path, in the middle of about 20 boats. With a bit of rope work and engine, we squeezed in. Tesco was in sight, Jan was ecstatic. We walked into town to find an optometrist to fix Gill’s reading glasses, found the library (no wifi) and went for coffee where there was wifi, posted the blog for the last few days, checked emails and forgot to check Skype messages. Had a look at Juliette’s (our house sitter) web site  and loved the photos and comments she posted. Thanks Juliette. Double shot coffee all round. Not too bad. Met other Aussies (they’re everywhere) at the table next to us and swapped experiences. Coffee took longer than we planned.

Jan drove the boat for a while today, it was great being able to alternate views of both banks without turning our heads.

The marina where we picked up the boat from closes at 6 pm and we managed to reach it by about 5:30 pm and pumped out, refilled with water, disposed of rubbish and were on our way within 15 mins. We motored up the canal for another 3/4 hour and found another peaceful over night stop. Unfortunately we can see one other boat (in the distance).

It’s been a reasonably solid day today. We’re going up the canal, against the flow and there was a strong head wind. The tiller took a lot of holding. The diesel engine had to work hard.

Yummy pasta with salmon and a well deserved wine now ready.
