Copmanthorpe (near York)

Last night was just a little different from the night before. The bed was big, the room was huge and the breakfast was there and substantial. We were lucky that we saw Ruswarp Hall.

When we left it was raining, but the rain cleared within an hour or so. We stopped in Scarborough to see the fair, but the main street through, along past the harbour had a small fun park and a lot of what seems to be typical British seaside fun parlours and take away food. Pity really because without all of that, the town would be much more attractive. I suppose these “attractions” are there for the cold, raining summer days so holiday makers have something to do. We did have a nice coffee outside looking over the harbour. Good time to ring mum, 11am here and 8pm in Melbourne. We found our way to the streets behind the touristy glitz and they were much more interesting and normal.

We followed the coast as much as we could and went for a walk at Flamborough Head, a promontory with reasonably high cliffs down to the water. Watched the lighthouse prism revolving quickly, saw what is thought to be the oldest lighthouse, built in 1673.

We decided to drive through to the west side of York, because we had the time, and find somewhere to put our heads for the night. We will drive to the nearby Park & Drive tomorrow morning and catch the bus into York. It will be great to get to bed early tonight.
