Baslow

The description, while accurate, of a family room with 2 double beds didn’t quite give us the full picture as to comfort level. Gary & Jan were considerate and let Gill & Rick have the slightly larger double bed. The other bed was a fold out one, with a thin mattress that sagged in the middle. It wasn’t a good night’s sleep for Gary & Jan. With 4 of us in the room, even though the window was opened as far as it could (not far), the room was quite warm. We did survive the night.

We stopped in Harrogate, an old spa town. Sunday is not a good day to play tourist because stuff doesn’t open ‘til 2 pm, so we walked around a little, had some coffee and left. Pity because we found a good (free all day because it was Sunday) on street park close to the centre of town.

We saw a sign to an English Heritage site, Bolsover Castle, and turned off the main road to find it. It was really more a mansion to impress rather than a castle, started in the early 1600s by Charles Cavendish and completed by his flamboyant son William, regardless of cost.

We decided to look for accommodation early today, we were all a little tired and didn’t want to still be looking at 7:30 pm again. We came across a pub in a little village and they had 2 rooms. We were told one price by the girl behind the bar, and when Gary went to check in, was told by the manager that this was the internet price and that the “off the street price” was £10 each room more. We stood in the bar of the pub, used their wifi and booked on line. Pays for the wine tonight.

Nice for all of us to have our own rooms again.

Just back from dinner in the large, well planted garden beside the pub. This beer garden has been planted in such a way that there are many secluded areas, including pergolas. This hotel was a good find.

Let’s see what tomorrow brings.
